Teachers & Educators Collective Bargaining Update 15 (28 Nov 07)
Teachers & Educators Collective Agreement
- Industrial Action Ballot Decision -
Even though there has been a change in Federal Government, secret ballots in pursuit of industrial action will still be a requirement before protected industrial action can take place.
At the September AEU-NT Executive meeting, Exec members made a decision not to pursue a ballot during term 4. There were concerns about the success of a ballot during one of the busiest times of the year. For a ballot to successfully authorise industrial action, there needs to be at least a 50% participation rate of registered voters, as well as more than 50% of members voting in favour of action. Also, there were concerns about the effectiveness and validity of industrial action if taken in November, considering the AEU-NT is still in talks with the government over various elements in our claims.
No doubt, however, serious consideration of a ballot early in term one next year will occur if we’re at loggerheads with the government.
